188金宝:Professor Zhu Yongbiao Interviewed by People's Daily (Overseas Edition) on the Situation in Afghanistan

Author:      From:      Hits:

In August last year, US forces withdrew from Afghanistan in disarray, leaving a mess behind. Now, one year later, Afghanistan, which is looking forward to post-war reconstruction, is facing multiple challenges such as a worsening humanitarian crisis, a continuing economic depression and frequent terrorist attacks. Experts on Afghanistan point out that the United States did not bring any development to Afghanistan in the past, and what the United States did out of self-interest has left the Afghan people in a difficult predicament. Today, instead of reflecting on the situation, the United States continues to harm Afghanistan.

"Afghanistan is now facing a systemic crisis for which the United States is responsible. Politically, the Afghan people were not prepared for regime change, and the irresponsible withdrawal of US troops has exacerbated the chaos and contributed in part to the diplomatic crisis the Afghan government is now facing; economically, Afghanistan lacks the ability to 'build blood', a bad consequence of 20 years of war and stemming from the US freezing of Afghan assets abroad that has brought Security-wise, the US counter-terrorism strategy over the past 20 years has included condoning and even nurturing extremist forces in its service, which has led to terrorist forces remaining active in Afghanistan. Moreover, the US withdrawal itself has exacerbated the humanitarian catastrophe, while most of the more than US$900 million in aid that the US claims to have provided to Afghanistan over the year has actually been spinning in circles within the US and has not reached the Afghan people at all." Zhu Yongbiao, director of the Center for Afghan StudiesofLanzhou University, said in an interview with this newspaper, "What's more, the Biden administration has frozen Afghan assets abroad again, looting Afghans of their life-saving money, and even the families of the victims of the '9/11' terror attacks have publicly urged the Biden administration to return the money to the Afghans."

"Over the past year or so, neighboring countries, including China, have been playing the role of constructive participants in the Afghan issue, exploring a cooperative and inclusive path of peace and reconciliation and national reconstruction." Zhu Yongbiao said, "However, neighboring countries have faced occasional obstruction by the US in the form of sanctions and even outright sabotage on Afghanistan, including through good offices and assistance. The US, despite its apparently reduced commitment in Afghanistan, still wants to maintain maximum influence on the Afghan issue and indeed the neighborhood at minimal cost. It is therefore important to consider the pernicious influence of the US as a potential spoiler and spoiler and beware of possible US attacks and all kinds of sabotage in further helping Afghanistan in the process of reconciliation and reconstruction."
